A carpet can look fine and smell fine and still be one of the dirtiest things in your house.

In a busy family home it almost always is. Shoes carry the yard inside, which around here means Sandhills sand and red clay that grind into the base of the pile. Dogs leave dander and the oil off their coats. Kids drop crumbs and juice and whatever came home from the playground. Most of it sinks below the tips of the fibers where you can't see it, and it stays put until something pulls it back out.

Before a cleaning, homeowners usually tell us some version of one of the beliefs below. Each has a grain of truth in it, which is why they hang on so long.

"I vacuum twice a week, so it's clean"

Keep vacuuming. It matters. A good vacuum picks up the loose, dry material on top: hair, crumbs, sand. What it can't lift is soil glued to the fibers by skin oil or a spilled soda, and that sticky layer is what turns a hallway gray. You could vacuum a traffic lane every day for a year and it would still be darker than the carpet under the couch.

"Carpet is bad for the air"

Half right. Carpet catches dust, pollen, and dander and holds them down, which beats having them drift around over a bare floor. The trouble starts once it's loaded. After that, every footstep kicks a little of it back into the air you're breathing. A real cleaning empties the trap so it can go back to catching things.

Here's the limit, plainly. Clean carpet won't cure anybody's allergies. If someone in the house has asthma, the floor is one source among several, and the HVAC filter and the bedding count as much as we do. We can take care of the carpet. The filters and the laundry are on you.

"It smells better, so the odor's gone"

Fresheners and plug-ins cover a smell for a few days. The source is still down there, usually a milk spill or a pet accident that soaked into the backing, and it comes right back the first humid week. Skip carpet powders entirely. The fine grit works down into the pile and gives the next cleaning one more thing to pull out. Getting rid of an odor means going after where it lives, and for urine that's an enzyme treatment that reaches the pad.

"A deep clean has to soak it"

This belief has cost a lot of people a lot of carpet. Flooding a room with water and sucking most of it back out leaves the pad damp for hours, sometimes overnight. A wet pad in a South Carolina summer is how you end up with the musty smell people blame on the cleaner. Good cleaning controls how much liquid goes down so the carpet is getting clean and drying at the same time. When our tech comes out, he checks how soiled each room is first, listens to what worries you, and meters the solution to match. A family room with a dog gets more than a guest bedroom.

"More soap means cleaner"

Leftover soap stays in the pile. It feels a little tacky underfoot and pulls dirt off every sock that crosses it, so the carpet looks worse a month after the cleaning than it did a month before. That's the main reason we clean with a soap-free solution. When somebody tells us their carpet "got dirty again so fast" after the last company, residue is nearly always what happened.

What actually helps between visits

Put a mat outside each door and another just inside it. That's where most of the sand gets stopped. Taking shoes off at the door does more than any product you can buy. Blot spills with a white towel and don't scrub. Every few months, shift the couch or a chair a few inches so the same strip of carpet isn't taking every step in the room.

When it's time for the real thing, our carpet cleaning visit picks up where the vacuum leaves off. If you'd like to try it on the rooms that bother you most before doing the whole house, the 3 rooms for $88 offer is built for exactly that.
