How Often Should You Schedule Carpet Cleaning in Blythewood, SC 29016

Twelve months. That's the interval most people have heard for professional carpet cleaning, and it's a fair number for a house with two adults, no animals, and shoes left at the door. For a lot of the homes we clean in Blythewood it's too long, since there's usually a dog in the picture and often a toddler as well.

Start with who lives there

The schedule should follow how hard the carpet is working. This is roughly how we'd set it:

  • A quiet house with no pets or kids can go about 12 months.
  • With children at home, plan on every 6 to 9 months.
  • If someone has allergies or asthma, every 4 to 6 months keeps dust and pollen from building up.
  • With a dog or cat, every 3 to 6 months, and sooner after accidents.
  • A big household with heavy daily traffic belongs with the pet group, animals or not.

The pet interval gets the most pushback, and it's the one we'd hold firm on. Dogs lie in the same few spots every day, track in yard dirt on wet paws, and leave coat oil wherever they settle. Wait a full year and that oil darkens the lanes while any accidents work their way into the pad. By then a regular cleaning has turned into odor treatment, which takes longer and costs more.

Going the other way, don't overdo it. A guest room that only sees use at Thanksgiving doesn't need the same calendar as the family room. Plenty of our customers have us do the busy rooms twice a year and catch the bedrooms once. Nothing says the whole house has to go at the same time.

Warning signs that move the date up

Forget the calendar if you notice any of these.

A hallway or walking path has gone a shade darker than the carpet beside it. That's oily soil, and vacuuming won't touch it.

A smell turns up on muggy days or right after the AC cycles off. Moisture in the air is reviving something in the backing.

Spots feel stiff or crunchy. Nine times out of ten that's leftover product from a rental machine or a store spray, and it's collecting dirt as you read this.

A stain you cleaned came back a few days later. This one fools people. The spill soaked into the backing, and as the surface dried it wicked the stain right back up to the top. Your technique was fine. The source was deeper than any towel could reach.

Everyone sneezes more indoors than out in spring. When pine pollen is turning every car in the driveway yellow, a good share of it is coming inside on shoes and settling into the pile.

Getting the house ready for the visit

A little prep makes the cleaning go further. Vacuum the day before, slowly and in two directions, with a HEPA filter if your vacuum takes one. That gets the loose stuff out of the way so the cleaning can work on what's stuck.

Pick small things up off the floor: toys, shoes, phone chargers, the laundry basket that lives by the bed. Move light furniture if you're able to, and leave the heavy pieces where they are. Please don't pre-treat stains with a store product in the week before we come. It can set some stains and leaves residue that has to come out first.

Make a short note of the spots that bother you and what's already been put on them. It's much easier than trying to remember in the hallway with the tech standing there. He'll walk the rooms with you, look at those spots, and give you the price before he starts. Put pets in a room we aren't cleaning or in their crate. The carpet dries quickly, but let it get dry to the touch before the dog gets his favorite corner back.

A schedule you'll actually keep

The schedule people stick with is one tied to something they already do. Spring cleaning, after the pollen drops, sets the house up for summer. A fall visit gets it ready for holiday company. Homes with pets usually book both, and that's about right.

If you're not sure which group your house falls in, call us at 803-393-7625, tell us who lives there, and we'll suggest an interval that fits. Our carpet cleaning page covers what the visit itself includes.
