Why Carpets Start Smelling Worse During Humid Weather

Old spills and pet accidents can stay quiet all winter and smell again by July. Why humidity revives carpet odor and what actually gets rid of it.

Why Carpets Start Smelling Worse During Humid Weather

A homeowner called us last July sure that her dog had started going behind the recliner. He hadn't. The spot was two years old, cleaned up at the time with paper towels and a spray, and it had stayed quiet all winter. Then the humidity came in and that corner of the den smelled like a kennel.

Calls like hers pick up every year once summer settles over the Midlands. Carpet that seemed fine in February starts smelling stale or musty or faintly like an old accident, and nobody can work out what changed. The weather did.

Why does humidity wake up old smells?

Carpet fibers and the pad beneath them pull moisture out of the air. In a dry month that barely matters. When the air turns heavy, the carpet takes on enough water to re-dissolve whatever dried in it, like a milk spill or the film of skin oil and dander that every lived-on carpet collects. Bacteria that had gone dormant in that residue start feeding again, and the smell is what they give off. Heat speeds the whole thing up, so a hot, sticky week is worse than a cool, damp one.

Urine is the clearest example. It dries into salts that keep drawing water out of the air, so an old spot can feel faintly damp and smell fresh on a muggy afternoon even though nothing has happened there in years.

Where is the smell actually coming from?

Usually lower than you'd guess. A spill soaks through to the backing and spreads into the pad in a wider circle than the stain you can see. Cleaning the surface fixes the color and leaves the source sitting underneath. Corners and the space behind furniture get it worst, since air barely moves there and pets like them.

Sometimes the carpet is innocent. A slab that sweats, a slow leak under a bathroom, or a crawlspace that takes on water every summer can all make a room smell musty. If the odor is spread evenly over a whole room and gets worse after rain, have the moisture checked before you pay anyone to clean carpet. We'll tell you the same thing on the phone.

Does vacuuming or a spray fix it?

Neither one, at least for long. A vacuum never gets near the pad. Sprays lay perfume over the bacteria, and in a humid stretch the bacteria outlast the perfume by a day or two. A lot of those sprays also leave a sticky film behind, so in a few weeks you've got a gray ring to go with the smell.

What works on an accident spot is breaking the residue down where it sits. Our urine treatment uses an enzyme that follows the urine down into the pad and digests it. The regular cleaning takes care of the rest of the room by lifting the oily soil the bacteria feed on.

Can cleaning in humid weather make it worse?

It can, if the method is wrong. A carpet that gets soaked and then sits in a shut-up house in August may stay wet most of the day, and a wet pad in warm air grows the exact smell you were paying to get rid of. That's the musty odor people end up blaming on "the carpet cleaners." We put down very little water, so the carpet dries before anything has a chance to grow. Whoever cleans your carpet, keep the AC running during and after.

What can you do before the next muggy stretch?

Keep the indoor humidity down. Running the AC steadily, plus a dehumidifier in a closed-up back room if you have one, will do more for carpet odor than anything on the cleaning aisle. Honestly, I'd buy the dehumidifier before I bought another bottle of carpet spray. Blot spills right away and put a fan on them, especially in summer. Then get the carpet cleaned in spring, ahead of the heat, so the residue is gone before the humidity has anything to work on.

We clean carpets all over Blythewood and the towns around it. If a room in your house smells worse every time the weather turns sticky, call 803-393-7625 on one of those days and describe what you're noticing. Where it's strongest, and when, tells us most of what we need to know.
